Cultural Competence

Cultural Competence includes the ability to understand how cultural differences shape our worldview and appreciate and adapt to cultural differences. Due to increasing diversity, individuals need to be able to move beyond awareness to be able to build on differences and to work well together.

Why is this skill critical for the workplace?

  • Value of cultural differences appreciated
  • Increased workplace innovation
  • Higher ability to take and receive feedback from others

By improving cultural competences in the workplace, you can:

  • REFLECT on biases
  • LEARN how to avoid prejudices
  • VALUE cultural differences

Cultural Competence is one of eight Relational Skills that together equip employees to work well together and do so in a way that builds trust, creates a respectful workplace, supports inclusion, and helps employees manage effectively in an ever-changing, increasingly digital and global world.

Designed for leaders, managers, human resources, trainers, and other professionals, the entire Relational Skills program* helps organizations address:

  • staff retention
  • diversity and inclusivity
  • onboarding
  • mental health
  • customer service
  • productivity
  • teamwork
  • safety

Some of the benefits for employees who are offered Relational Skills training* include increased ability to:

  • Be situationally aware
  • Show empathy and shared perspective
  • Relate from a “people first” point of view
  • Be change ready
  • See situations from a systems perspective
  • Adopt a “global citizen” mindset
  • Engage with others in a respectful way
  • Build self-management and self-awareness skills
