Performance Development and Learning

This course is a Core Course in the QNET Certificate in Facilitation & Design (CFD)

Do you feel your employees aren’t meeting expectations, even though you’ve provided clear instructions and resources? Are you struggling to pinpoint why performance issues persist despite your best efforts?

You’re not alone. Many leaders and managers face the same challenge of improving performance without always knowing where to start.

On a larger scale, businesses worldwide deal with the impact of underperformance, misaligned goals, and wasted resources. Without a structured approach, organizations often rely on ineffective solutions, like unnecessary training or unclear performance targets, that don’t lead to meaningful improvement. Understanding what influences performance is key to creating a productive and engaged workforce.

This workshop will give you the tools and strategies to analyze performance issues, identify the root causes, and implement solutions that see real improvements.

You will learn how to assess performance gaps, decide when training is the right approach, and create an environment where success is possible. Through hands-on activities, you’ll apply a structured performance mapping process to align business goals, employee capabilities, and workplace conditions.

Instead of guessing what’s wrong, you’ll leave with a structured, data-driven approach to diagnosing and solving performance challenges in your workplace. This workshop will help you build a high-performing team, allowing your employees and your organization to thrive.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the key factors that influence employee performance and motivation in the workplace.
  • Lead performance improvement efforts by applying structured methods to identify and address root causes of underperformance.
  • Set clear, measurable goals and build accountability through effective communication and follow-through.
  • Identify what to focus on when measuring and analyzing performance.
  • Determine when training is appropriate or if other factors such as tools, feedback or support are needed.
  • Create the conditions employees need to succeed in their work.
  • Use a performance mapping process to connect business goals with people’s needs to succeed in their roles.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for professionals responsible for improving employee performance and who want a structured, practical approach to diagnosing and addressing performance gaps. Whether you’re supporting individual team members or driving department-wide change, this session will help you focus on what matters most.

You should attend if you:

  • Feel frustrated by ongoing performance issues despite providing clear direction and resources
  • Want to move beyond guesswork and identify the root causes of underperformance
  • Are unsure when training is the right solution or when something else is needed
  • Need a better process for setting clear goals and building accountability
  • Want to align employee performance with business outcomes and expectations
  • Work in a leadership, management, HR, or learning and development role where performance improvement is part of your responsibilities

Attending this workshop will give you a structured, data-driven approach to diagnosing and solving performance challenges in your workplace. It will also help you build a more productive, engaged, and high-performing team, giving both your employees and your organization the opportunity to thrive.

Workshop Format

This workshop is structured around real workplace situations where you’re asked to support performance, guide development, or help others learn on the job. You’ll move between individual reflection, case scenarios, and small-group discussion to explore how different approaches affect outcomes. You will test ideas, share challenges, exchange strategies and gain peer support. You’ll work with your own content ideas so you can apply everything directly to your work.

You’ll also receive a workbook with a guided performance mapping process to support performance and learning beyond the session.

Workshop Activities Include:

  •  Identifying business needs
  • Comparing current and desired outcomes to identify performance gaps
  • Completing a gap factor analysis to explore root causes
  • Identifying potential interventions to close the performance gap
  • Developing a performance development plan
  • Working through performance-related case scenarios
  • Creating a personal action plan
  • Completing a proof-of-learning assignment

Susan is always great, knowledgeable and organized.

I think this will help me help others, when they are looking to create training to solve performance issues.

It highlighted the gaps in my own processes as well as reiterated the issues I’m having, confirming I’m on the right track.

A great session with good templates to guide me along the way.

The session was great. The ease and accessibility of the session was much appreciated.
